Starch is produced in green plant cells and used for The storage of food. When we eat starch, we produce an enzyme called amylase that digests (breaks down) the starch Back into simple sugars. If you allow tasteless starch to remain in your mouth for a while, it begins to taste sweet because of amylase in your saliva. Enzymes, the proteins that cause things to happen in the cell, are often named for the substrate on which they work. For example, the enzyme that breaks down sucrose is called sucrose and the enzyme that breaks down the sugar maltose is called maltase. A snail can get food value by eating the cell wall of a mushroom (chitin), or a termite can eat paper (cellulose). With the enzymes chitinase and cellulase, these animals digest these complex carbohydrates (polysaccharides) into glucose to be processed for combustion in their mitochondria. With the help of alpha lipoic acid, the processed glucose can enter the mitochondrial powerhouse and generate live giving energy.

I know how foolish this is, and I can hear you sighing at my stupidity. But can you honestly say that you don't employ all sorts of silly tricks to make yourself seem more attractive?even if it means compromising your health?

On the other hand, vanity is what keeps us from walking around in pajamas all day, and moves some of us to go for a run or head to the gym. So a little egotism is a good thing after all. The problem comes when the price you pay against your health is too high.

The health price I pay to satisfy my vanities seems token?heck, I can still walk, right? But that's not true for everyone. A good friend of mine has taken unhealthy vanities to the extreme. Her sole satisfaction in life comes from looking skinny. She feels proud of herself when she doesn't eat and disgusted with herself if she doesn't work out.

The saddest part of it this is that my friend realizes her vanity is making her miserable, depressed, and probably sick. Yet she continues in her destructive quest. That's when vanity becomes insanity. Unfortunately, few of us know when we're about to cross the line from swollen feet in the name of fabulous shoes to pure self-abuse. To steer clear of that slippery slope, maybe I'll try to put my health first, perhaps by switching to comfy shoes. After all, they do make some pretty stylish sneakers these days, right?

Is Chiropractic Advertising a Waste of Money?

We've all tried the same things for the most part, as the same worn-out chiropractor advertising and marketing strategies are just recycled throughout the years. Yet, why do we fall for this stuff when it only has been shown to produce mediocre results? The answer is because of lack of awareness. When studying Bob Proctor, I like what he says. He states "The person that makes $50,000 / year doesn't make that income because he wants to, he makes that income because he doesn't know how to make $100,000 / year!" This quote is spot-on and pertains to all business owners including chiropractors. Awareness is everything.

It's important to make yourself "aware" of new marketing tactics and strategies since we live in a different world now, as opposed to even 3 years ago. So much in the chiropractic profession has changed just like in the communications and marketing field. Allow me to share a personal example. I was getting mediocre results several years ago until I discovered a new way of connecting with people and marketing that revolutionized my practice and really opened the flood-gates. This phenomenon was referred to as Web 2.0, a term that many in the chiropractic profession are still unaware of. I began to utilize social networks, video, and other forms of social media to build myself as a credible expert within my community and boy did it pay off in a major way!

That's when I had this overwhelming amount of chiropractors get wind of the killer results I was attaining and they began to beg me to teach them. I began social media consulting almost three years ago and I've been living a truly abundant and rewarding life helping others. Social media is virtually an untapped, new patient treasure-chest if you know how to leverage it in certain ways. Take video, for example. People have a natural voyeuristic tendency, as proven by the reality TV boom.

Did you know major television networks are now teaming up to try and compete with YouTube (the 3rd most visited website in the world)? Very few people are turning to major network television for news anymore so the networks are freakin out. People are flocking to this video sharing network by the truckload. This sign was one that I caught onto very early and has been the best move I could've every made for my chiropractic marketing and other ventures.

In no other places on the web or offline, can you connect with so many targeted prospects like you can on social networks like Myspace, YouTube, Facebook, BlackPlanet, Tagged, etc... Pay attention to how many employers are now beginning to forbid their employees to navigate these networks at work. It's been a big problem nationally... haha. I mean, this addictive behavior should clue you into the massive drawing power of social media! From a business perspective, it's music to my ears.

The sooner you get involved and understand how to market on these networks, the more profitable and "recession-proof" your chiropractic practice will become. Social media and social networks are not a fad, I assure you. People are becoming rich and famous everyday from their use. The question is, when would "now" be a good time for your chiropractic marketing to evolve into the new world?

Being masterful at giving feedback requires that managers are able to separate fact from fiction and reality from perception. There is a powerful principal discovered by social psychologist which often blurs the boundaries when people seek to answer the question of why someone engages in a particular behavior. The principle is called the fundamental attribution error and it relates to how motive is assigned to the actions of others. It the simplest turns the principle states that we assume people behave as they do because that is the way they are. If someone reacts in a short tempered fashion it is because they are a rude and intolerant individual. Conversely we do not apply the same standard when explaining our own actions. Our own short temper is explained as resulting from having a bad day, or being tired, or having a headache.
In his book Intuition, David Myers relates the results of an experiment conducted by David Napolitan and George Goethals in which subjects were asked to interact with another individual who was a collaborator in the experiment. The collaborator was instructed to act in either a warm and friendly or a cool and aloof manner. As might be expected the subjects perceived the collaborator as being either warm and friendly or cool and aloof depending on how they acted. What is surprising is that even when subjects were told before hand that the collaborator was going to be acting a role, the subjects still believed that the collaborator's real personality was consistent with the role they were playing. This illustrates how powerful the tendency is to take the behavior of others out of context.
Inferring the character and motives of others from their actions is not a bad thing to do. It is part of how we make sense of the world and learn to deal with the individuals that we encounter. The pitfall is that while we consider the circumstances when explaining our own behavior when it comes to the behavior of others we gravitate toward an explanation that attributes their behavior to their basic nature without considering the context and situation in which the behavior occurs.
For the manager who is responsible to assess performance and provide feedback, the message is a cautionary one. It is important to realize that committing the fundamental attribution error by assuming someone's behavior is always a result of who they are and ignoring the context and situation in which the behavior occurred is too simplistic. It is important to consider both the context and the situation in which the performance occurred. A normally polite individual can become rude and short tempered when trying to meet a tight deadline. This behavior can be disruptive and have a negative impact on the work team, the organization and even the customer. While this is clearly not acceptable performance and should not be excused, to focus solely on the issue of rude behavior is to miss the mark. The stress of the deadline that contributed to the behavior is the root cause of the unacceptable performance. Effective performance feedback from the manager will address the impact of rude behavior because that is the performance issue but also will focus the discussion of performance improvement around strategies for managing or eliminating stress. Management's responsibility is to produce results and focusing on root cause by avoiding the pitfall of the fundamental attribution error is one of the tools used by masterful managers.

A vision is essential, because it helps the team focus on a common goal. This common objective is easily lost once individuals work on lower level details such as requirements, code, and so on.
Every project should have a vision statement that each stakeholder can understand. The vision statement is helpful to clarify the core values of the project. It should state why a customer or end user will want the solution the project team is building. The shorter the vision statement is, the better it is. A sign of a successful vision statement is that everyone on the project team can relate to it and connect their daily work to it.
Key questions to consider include:
•Why are we building this solution?
•Does the team understand the vision?
•Does the team work on things that contribute to the vision?
Explain that one way to think about vision statements is to consider whether your project is a Strategic project or an Adaptive project.
•Strategic projects involve significant investments based on a plan to improve appreciably over their predecessors.
•Adaptive projects are those that make incremental changes to existing systems.•
A useful way to help derive a vision statement for a strategic project is the "elevator pitch". i.e. you can recite it to a perspective customer or stakeholder in a brief duration of an elevator ride. The stakeholder / customer should be able to remember it from a short encounter.
For adaptive projects, it's often easier to describe the vision in terms of business process change. If a business process model or description is available, that's a good start point.
